On one of Auckland’s sunny days we decided to walk from down town Auckland wharf to Mission Bay for a light lunch then catch the bus back into town. Our little walk took us half a day, we stopped to look at this and that and we sat down on every beach we came too.  From the bottom of Queen St in down town Auckland, walk along Quay St with the harbour on your left shoulder, there is not a lot to see till you walk past the main container shipping wharf which will take you (15Min).  Keep to the left hand side of the road.  The walk way is divided into a walking and cycle lane.  Stay in your designated lane, if you don’t, you will soon learn not to stray.

Half way across the first bridge I looked over the side as you always do, expecting to see fish swimming by, but all I saw was a small penguin also looking for fish.  And at the end of the bridge there was a shag drying out his wings after a quick dive in to the water, he also was looking for fish, but alas we all missed out.

Okahu Bay - Time for a pit stop.  The toilets are in the middle of the bay, right next to the foot path. The tide goes out at least (100m) in this bay.  To walk out so the water is up to your waist you will need to walk out another (100m) further.   The bay is made up of sand with a little mud and shells for good measure.  The second photo is looking back to Auckland from Okahu Bay you can see the Sky tower. A good spot for that night photo.  Do you feel like treating yourself to lunch? At the end of this bay and across the other side of the road is one of Auckland’s top seafood restaurant -  Hammerheads, you will not be disappointed. From the Orakei wharf you walk past Briddicks Bay then around Bastion Point and along to Mission Bay. About (1.3Ks)  In Mission Bay there are a number of restaurants for your dinning pleasure.  They range from fine sliver service to fish and chips, wrapped up in white paper.  How do you feel now, after that filling lunch, do you want to walk the lunch off.  You could walk another (2.4Ks) to St Heliers Bay; just follow the walk way along the bays to Kohimarama Beach, around Gower Pont and into St Heliers Bay.  There is a small but unique shopping centre there. Worth the walk around.   The bus leaves from across St Heliers Bay Beach to take you back in to town.   Click here to see restaurants in Mission Bay and St Heliers Bay
