Driving Instructions: Get on to the main highway (2) which will run you across to Taupo or up north to Wairoa and Gisborne. You will drive past Napier Airport at around 5.1 ks.  At 12.5ks you will be at the turn off to Taupo Lake.  Do not turn to the left, drive straight ahead and over the bridge.  At 24ks you will be driving through the twist and turn Tangoio Forest.  The tricky part is to find the entrance to White Pine Reserve, especially if a truck is behind you.  At 24ks, you will snake your way up a hill in a narrow section of road. At around 26ks you should cross a concrete bridge. The road from here on flattens out so don’t speed up. At 27ks look for the signs for White Pine.  Indicate, stick your hand out the window if need be, let the traffic behind you know what you are doing.  There is no room for you to pull off the road before turning into the reserve.
Camping on track: No
Track highlights: Kahikatea or white pine. There are a number of Kahikatea, Tawa and Pukatea on this walk.  Nikau palms are also in abundance. Vines, shrubs and ferns hide in the shaded areas along the walk.  Keep an eye out for native birds including Tui, pigeons, fantails, bellbirds, silvereyes and  grey warblers

At 27 ks look for this long flat stretch of road, with a climb at the end. The signs on the left, will be coming up very quickly.  The car park is large enough to park 30 cars.  Read the notice board across from the shelter. Hike in a clockwise direction that way the last halve of the tramp, is slightly down hill.

A word of warning, don’t touch the stinging nettle let alone walk in to it.  If you think a bee sting is distressing, try our stinging nettle especially in the summer time when the nettle in young and succulent.  Two bridges to cross, this is the first one, follow the track around to the left.  From here on the track is easy to follow

The Nikau palms are at the top of the walk,  you feel as if you are walking  back in time, you feel as if a dinosaur is hiding behind a palm a thousand years old waiting for you to walk past, so it can chase you down the track.

Walk over the second bridge to the table and chairs, the perfect spot to sit and listen to the songs of New Zealand native birds.  It’s not too remote to carry a picnic lunch with you; It’s a superior spot for lunch, better then back at the car park.  No deafening cars and trucks racing past you, trying to get up the next hill.  The walk back to the car is on a slight downhill run.
